alter ego 2000
Pleasure and ageing potential
After an unusually warm, wet spring flowering was quick. Mid-flowering took
place on June 2nd .
The weather at the beginning of July turned cool and damp, but warm, dry
weather set in the second half of July and it continued into August and
September. Véraison took place at the beginning of August (August 6th
marked the mid-point). There was a significant lack of rain
(-65%) in late summer, which resulted in vine stress. Measurements taken
just before picking began, indicated that although the sugar levels were
good, they were below the record year of 1999. However, the conditions of
obtaining phenolic maturity were perfect, especially for the Cabernet
Sauvignon grapes that are harvested last. Physical examination of the
skins showed them to be ripe, thick and deeply coloured.
The harvest took place under good weather conditions which allowed each
plot of vines to be picked at optimum maturity.
Once in vat, the outstanding quality of the grapes was confirmed. During
the first few days of fermentation, the colour of the must was almost
black and intensely aromatic, filling the vat house with aromas of ripe,
black fruits. After 20 days maceration, measurements showed the phenolic
compound levels to be high (between 70-80) but not a threat to the balance
of the wine.
Château Notes, February 21st 2003
Beautiful, deep red colour.
Just bursting with aroma. There is already a superb, full-fledged bouquet
with overtones of black fruit, spice, liquorice, leather, smokiness,
cocoa, and coffee. This rich bouquet sets the stage for the wine's broad,
generous structure on the palate. 2000 Alter Ego is full-bodied,
well-balanced, and in no way flabby. The blend of 2/3 Merlot and 1/3
Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect.
2000 Alter Ego is an opulent, elegant wine that is delicious now, but will
also age for a long time
