Characteristics of the vintage

Perfect weather lasted throughout the year and through the harvest . After three months of sunshine and high temperatures in June, July and August, some rain and cooler weather came in September, although this was in no way harmful to the crop. By the time picking began, the weather was fine again; the grapes had reached optimum maturity and were in perfect condition

The wines from the 1995 vintage are remarkable for their rich, tannic structure without a trace of astringency.

Harvest dates: from 09/18/1995 to 10/02/1995

Merlot: 51%
Cabernet Sauvignon: 40%
Cabernet Franc: 9%

Ageing potential

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011:

Beautiful ruby-red colour with garnet-red highlights.
Fruity, Mediterranean nose. More shy than the 1998, but the bouquet is more sunny, with overtones of tomato, cherry, and red apple.
Classic, round, broad-based, generous, and intense on the palate. Low acidity but more character.

Tasting notes from Georges Lepré, 02/04/2009:

The inky color has purple highlights.

Aromatically it explodes with blackcurrants, blackberries, figs, prunes, gingerbread, sandalwood, mint, cedar, leather, and truffle…

The attack shows a flamboyantly gothic architecture: opulent fruit, an elegant tannic structure, ideal acidity, finishing with a long-lasting flavor and perfect control… This combination contributes to its power and elegance. Today the components are not entirely incorporated, but such is the law of great bottles: patience.

Expect its peak between 2010 and 2030.

Press Review, Jancis Robinson, 09/14/2009
« Deep garnet. Really quite floral (violets and floral dried herbs) but also lots of dark fruit. Very firm and muscular and dense. Powerful but still aromatic. Some dried fruits, even a savoury dark toffee/molasses note. Also cedary and fresh and cigar box. Slight dustiness. Really firm, tannins a little dry on the finish and more liquorice as it opens up. Not ready yet.

Falstaff, Peter Moser, 11/01/2006

Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, 09/01/2005

Wine International, Richard Bampfield, 05/01/2005
« Very deep and relatively undeveloped with cassis fruit and new oak. Very youthful and full of fruit this is bright, vibrant and harmonious.  »

Wine News, Abraham Horowitz, 04/01/2004
« Deep ruby hue. Rich scents of black cherry and plum with hints of mocha and leather. Ripe tannins and juicy flavors of raspberry and wild cherry. Raspberry marks the clean finish.  »

Weinwisser, Keine Bewertung, 02/01/2003

Vins & Spiritueux, Enrico Bernado, 11/01/2002

Rogov's Ramblings, Daniel Rogov, 10/01/2002
« Delicious full bodied and very well balanced Palmer that is in definite need of bottle aging before it shows its best. Plenty of tannins here, those promising to integrate nicely with gentle cedar and spicy wood and generous berry, currant and minty flavors and aromas. Promising a long finish, the wine will be at its best only starting in 2005 and will cellar comfortably until 2020 or longer.  »

Thuries Magazine, Guy Carriere, 09/01/2002
« Encore une magnifique bouteille. Robe très foncée à peine évoluée. Bouquet fondu, harmonieux de fruits noirs bien mûrs. Notes de réglisse, d'épices orientales. Un régal en bouche. Chair enrobée, volumineuse, tanins constitués et moelleux. Quelle élégance, du pur plaisir! Long et riche. excellente aptitude à la garde.  »

« Souple, très merlot, suave  »

Rogov's Ramblings, Daniel Rogov, 07/01/2000
« Medium to full bodied and packed with delicious flavors of black currants, vanilla, cedar wild and spices (look for vanilla, allspice and black pepper) and even with hints of raspberries, this wine is like a Rorshach test, opening on the palate and giving rise to marvellous flavor and scent associations. Deep in color, loaded with silky tannins, and with aftertastes of spices and fruits that linger on and on, this delicious wine is approachable now but begin to approach its peak only in another 3 – 4 years. Score 91. (Tasted 30 July 2000) »

Private tasting dinner (blind), Tom Cannavan, 05/01/1998
« Very deep purple colour. Quite tight, but straightforward black fruits then a more interesting, higher, flowery note developing. Really quite luscious
palate with minty, eucalyptus, blackcurrant fruit and spice. Great thwack of tannin really powers through in the finish which is quite difficult at present. Could be excellent. »

The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker, 02/01/1998
« Bottled in July, 1997, this wine includes an extremely high percentage of Merlot (about 43%). It is a gloriously opulent, low acid, fleshy Palmer that will be attractive early and keep well. Dark ruby/purple-colored, with smoky, toasty new oak intertwined with gobs of jammy cherry fruit, and floral and chocolate nuances, this medium to full-bodied, plump yet elegant wine is impressive.  »

Fine Wine Review, Claude Kolm, 05/01/1997
« The 1995 Palmer has somewhat more Merlot than the 1996.
The flavors are broader than in the 1996 and the wine is more open and loosely-knit. Cassis and blackberry dominate the fruit, and the wine still is a bit angular and tannic. It would appear to need more time to come around than most 1995s.  »

The wine advocate, Neal Martin, 11/30/-0001
« This is one of the best Palmer's of the decade. The nose is generous with raspberry, strawberry and that touch of lemongrass noted on previous occasions. The palate is full-bodied and precocious, fleshy, lots of stuffing and rounded in texture. Good depth with a savoury second half, nice grippy tannins with a raspberry and cooked meats towards the finish. On this showing the wine could actually benefit from further bottle ageing, but this remains a “solid” long-term Palmer. Impressive, but pleasure will come later. Drink 2010-2020+  »
