Characteristics of the vintage

On the night of April 21st, Bordeaux suffered the severest and most damaging frost since 1945. Depending on the region, between 20% and 80% of the harvest was destroyed and what grapes remained was later damaged by heavy rainfall at picking time.

Given such difficult conditions, only draconian berry and vat selection could produce wines with structure and fruit.

Harvest dates: from 09/30/1991 to 10/10/1991

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon: 58%
Merlot: 36%
Cabernet Franc: 4%
Petit Verdot: 2%

Ageing potential

Tasting

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011:

Garnet-red colour with some bricking.
Concentrated bouquet, with hints of mushroom, forest floor, old panelling, ceps, truffles, humid cellar, and forest fruit jam.
Very tannic, subtle, and feminine on the palate. The aftertaste is reminiscent of flowers and gooseberry jam.
A fascinating and charming vintage.

Tasting notes from Georges Lepré, 02/04/2009:

A very dense ruby color.

The expressive bouquet unfolds with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, blueberries, spices, fresh mint, and cocoa, with floral and musky notes.

The attack distinguishes itself with the subtle grace of ripe fruit and marvelously tender and savory tannins. Freshness accentuates without overwhelming and so participates in the wine's overall harmony. The long finish is full of refreshing floral notes.

This is a real pleasure, direct, immediate and…unexpected from such a difficult vintage that could have only been saved by a draconian selection.
Quite the lesson.

Press Review

Wine News, Abraham Horowitz, 04/01/2004
« Dense garnet hue with a tint of orange at the rim. Powerful scents of sweet tobacco, cedar and wild cherry. Velvety tannins and ripe flavors of Bing cherry, brown sugar and soy sauce. Layers of leather, oak, orange rind and smoke in the ethereal close.  »

Prestige, Jen Shek Voon, 02/01/2004
« The Wine was the surprise of the evening's tastings because in the evening of April 21, 1991, the vineyards suffered their severest frost damage since 1945. The wine showed what draconian berry and vat selection could do under the most difficult conditions. The dark middle in the glass showed off the ruby red border with an orange fringe with a nose swirling with essence of black fruits and with a power to evoke further senses. The taste is full of plum fleshiness with a wonderful, long finish.  »

Thuries Magazine, Guy Carriere, 09/01/2002

Wine Magazine, 07/01/2001
« A rich, cherry nose. Refreshing and sweet, almost fleshy. Palate with cgerry flavoured fruit. A good stylish wine. NM
Fragrant with gingery, redcurrent fruit and vanilla/toasted oak. Supple and attractive with stylish open flavours and a good level of ripeness. Good, sweet, plummy finish. OP  »
