Characteristics of the vintage

After a long, cold winter, flowering in June was delayed and uneven. Cool temperatures and a lack of sunshine in July led to coulure and millerandage (imperfect flower set and fruit set).

Fortunately August and the beginning of September were warm and hopes were high that this would be another good year. As the harvest approached, the Merlot and Cabernet grapes were reaching satisfactory levels of ripeness, although these varied throughout the region.

Unfortunately, cool, rainy weather set in from the 7th October, resulting in dilution.

Where growers carried out strict selection and ran-off large volumes of new wine in tank, the wines were supple and fruity with medium structure.

Harvest dates: from 10/01/1987 to 10/16/1987

Merlot: 48%
Cabernet Sauvignon: 45%
Cabernet Franc: 5%
Petit Verdot: 2%

Ageing potential

2015. In decline.

Tasting notes from Enrico Bernardo, 12/01/2011:

Clear garnet-red colour
Very forward bouquet redolent of herbs, tobacco, star anise, clove, juniper berries, plum, and rosemary.
Very soft, generous, round, and full-bodied on the palate. Not a trace of oxidation.
Very similar to the 1993.

Tasting notes from Georges Lepré, 02/04/2009:

The moderately intense garnet color has a reddish-brown trim around the glass.

An intense bouquet reveals a stunning variety of aromas including notes of blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, cinnamon, cedar, pencil lead, wax and moss.

The tender tannic structure, clean fruit and exquisite freshness charm our taste buds. Everything is in graceful harmony. The wine is truly a delicacy and finishes with an impressive length where we encounter the same aromas found in the bouquet.
This is a wine that one will enjoy with a great deal of pleasure. Although it's a joy to drink today, it can be held until 2015.

« Robe moyennement sombre, nez léger, fruité. Un 87 facile, assez vert, mais agréable. »

« Le 87 de Palmer s'impose comme la grande réussite du millésime dans l'appellation.
